| The large intestine finishes the remaining process that the small
intestine started. This takes anywhere from 6 to 24 hours to make the passage from
the cecum to the anus. The large intestine absorbs vitamins that are created by the
bacteria in the colon. One of it's most important dutys is to absorb water and contact the waste into a semi solid which is then ready to expel out to the body. The large intestine has three long muscles that extend a full distance of the colon. It is also larger in diameter than the small intestine. While both the small and large intestine have small glands that absorb some of the products formed by the bacteria inhabiting the region they are more abundant in the large intestine. The large intestine contains over 700 species of bacteria that perform a variety of functions. These bacteria also produce small amounts of vitamins, especially vitamin K and Biotin (a B vitamin), for absorption into the blood. |
