Enemas produce a peristaltic action in the colon to
push against the fecal mass and move feces down the colon Enemas and clysters have been administered since before recorded history, using
instruments ranging from animal horns and hollowed out bamboo shoots to metal syringes to
inject purgatives, herbs, opium, turpentine, tobacco, oxygen and noxious ingredients. The
potentially lethal dangers are today well recognised. The colo-rectal passage, now less
often used for laxative enemas is still There are many different types of enemas. By distending the rectum, all enemas (even the simplest type, the tap water enema) stimulate the colon to contract and eliminate stool. Other types of enemas have additional mechanisms of action. For example, saline enemas cause water to be drawn into the colon. Phosphate enemas stimulate the muscles of the colon by drawing water into the colon. Mineral oil enemas lubricate and soften hard stool. Emollient enemas contain agents that soften the stool. Enemas are particularly useful when there is impaction, which is the hardening of stool in the rectum from over absorption of water. In order to be effective, the instructions that come with the enema must be followed. This requires full application of the enema, appropriate positioning after the enema is instilled, and retention of the enema until urgent evacuation is felt. A Home Enema is hygienic, refreshing and easy, you'll want to use it again and again. |
