| Colonoscopy visual inspection of the entire large intestine An internal examination of the rectum, sigmoid colon, and large bowel using a type of very small video camera. A colonoscopy exam usually takes about 20 minutes to an hour. The instrument is inserted into the anus and then they start filling the colon with air, then they proceed to insert instrument further into the colon until the desired depth is achieved. This usually means they've inserted the instrument all of the way to the cecum. During the procedure they may need to add more air to the colon to keep it distended. After the procedure is finished and the colon tube is removed you need to try and expel as much gas and air as possible. When you return home you may wish to take a cleansing enema series to remove any air remaining in the colon. |

| Everybody will tell you that the hardest part and the worst part of this procedure is the preparation before the procedure. You have to have a completely clean intestinal tract . No solid food for 24 hours before procedure . You will have to take strong laxatives that produce a diarrhea type effect. So you will need to stay near a toilet.Sometimes you will even be asked to take enemas to make sure the colon is clear. | |
