Our colons were intended by nature to function like a smooth flowing sewer system, in order to promptly flush digestive wastes from the body.
The large intestine is one of the four main elimination systems of the body.
In Chinese medicine all the internal organs are paired. The large intestine(Colon) is paired with the lungs.
Your colon is made up of sections .
(1) Anus
(2) Rectum
(3) Sigmoid Colon
(4) Descending Colon
(5) Transverse Colon
(6) Ascending Colon
(7) Appendix
(8) Small Intestine
The large intestines total length is approximately 5 to 5    feet and it ends at the anus where feces is eliminated from the body. The small intestines length is approx. 26 ft. long.
They are called large and small not because of their length but because of their width & diameter.

Colon therapy (or Colonics) Enemas can be important. A properly functioning colon is necessary for the transport of nutrients. The inner lining of the colon is equipped with sensitive nerves and glands. These glands aid in the final stages of digestion and the assimilation of food (especially minerals and water), and in eliminating body wastes from the system.

Over time the walls of the colon get packed (or lined) with accumulated feces, the colon cannot absorb nutrients or eliminate wastes properly.

When the food cannot be processed efficiently in the colon, unfriendly bacteria begins to grow. Fermentation and putrefacation of undigested food results, and toxins (poisons) are formed. There are some 36 poisons that pollute the body. They include indole, skatole, phenol, creosole, putrescine, cadaverine, sepsin and others. In cases of alimentary toxemia, one or several of these poisons are constantly bombarding the
delicate body cells. This can cause disease, one of which is the dreaded colon cancer.

By the time the chyme has reached this tube, almost all nutrients and approximately approximately 90% of the water have been absorbed by the body. Some electrolytes like sodium, magnesium, and chloride are left as well as indigestible carbohydrates known as dietary fiber. As the chyme continues through the large intestine, most of the remaining water is removed, while the chyme is mixed with mucus and bacteria known as gut flora, and becomes feces.

The bacteria break down some of the fiber for their own nourishment and create acetate, propionate, and butyrate as waste products, which in turn are used by the cell lining of the colon for nourishment. A symbiotic relationship provides about one hundred calories a day for the body.
