For a complete cleansing of the large intestine you need to fill and distend the colon including the cecum with enema solution. In normal healthy adults with no intestinal problems the average amount of enema solution is about 2 to 2½ quarts. Many people discover after taking their first enema that on the second and third enema in a series they can comfortably take quite a bit more solution. Sometimes some people as much as 4 qts with reasonable comfort. |

Do not use enemas or laxatives if abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting are present
unless directed by your health care provider.
Rectal bleeding or failure to have a bowel movement after use of a laxative or enema may
indicate a serious condition.
