|By hanging the enema bag
at 18 in. to 24 in. above the rectum
will create a slow gentle flow of enema
solution into the colon.
If for some reason the enema flow stops you can temporarily raise the bag higher to resume the flow.
Most people find that a slow introduction of warm fluid into the rectum is much easier to manage and hold than if the solution is entering the colon at a high flow rate.
|Massaging the Abdomen : When receiving the enema
Massage abdomen in a counter-clockwise direction this will help move the solution higher into the colon. Massaging the abdomen also helps in relieving the cramping sensation.
There are some enemas that when given need to be at a bag height higher than 18 to 24 in.
Warning: Do not use enemas
or laxatives if abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting are present unless directed by your
health care provider.
Rectal bleeding or failure to have a bowel movement after use of a laxative or enema may indicate a serious condition.
Discontinue use and consult your health care provider.
